The primary role of this directory is to provide online access to a growing database of cleantech innovation labs, testbeds, and demonstration sites located throughout the northeastern U.S.
New England is a unique region in the United States, characterized by small states with diverse attributes, a broad culture of entrepreneurism, and an abundance of research institutions. Building and maintaining a strong cleantech innovation cluster requires awareness, access, and development of regional innovation assets, networks, and culture. The Cleantech Innovation Cluster Analysis Program was launched in early 2013 to document the landscape of cleantech innovation across the region, establishing a comprehensive database including early-stage cleantech companies and the critical infrastructure supporting them. The first phase of this project included initial data gathering and high-level analysis including deliverables that help:
- Define, quantify, and assess the clean energy cluster and support regional innovators and entrepreneurs find the resources they need to hit commercialization milestones,
- Assist in recruitment of entrepreneurs, inventors, and companies to the New England clean energy cluster and
- Educate policy-makers and other stakeholders in the region
This included identifying many of the region’s laboratories and testbeds available to help emerging companies validate their technologies. Phase 2 of this project is to conduct a deep dive into laboratory, testbed, and demonstration site capabilities seated within and around the northeast’s cleantech cluster. This research established the database on which this online directory is based. This directory and its database represent an important step in the ongoing effort to providing a comprehensive, accessible listing of the laboratory, testbed and demonstration capabilities that emerging cleantech companies seek when trying to validate their technologies.
